THE MOONLIT GIFT NOTES

How to choose a personalised children’s book

Start with the moment you want to share: a bedtime read, a first birthday keepsake or a playful introduction to letters.

Start with the occasion

A new baby gift might be read aloud by an adult; a birthday gift can celebrate a specific milestone. Choose a story that fits the occasion rather than relying only on the cover.

See how personalisation works

Check where the name appears and whether a dedication is included. Personalised text does not necessarily mean personalised character artwork.

Compare the physical book

Look for dimensions, page count and cover material. For very young children, check whether the book is a board book or a reading-together book.

Plan delivery

Made-to-order gifts need time. Use the current Etsy estimate for the selected book and address before deciding.

Match the story to the child, not just the occasion

Begin with what the family enjoys reading together. A child who loves animals may enjoy a woodland bedtime journey or a collection of animal rhymes; another may be more interested in a dinosaur adventure. Look at the sample spreads and read the story summary before choosing. Personalisation adds a familiar name, but the underlying story should still feel like a good fit. When you are buying for a family you do not see often, asking which themes the child likes is more useful than guessing from an age alone. Our collections group stories by occasion so you can compare a small shortlist.

Understand the different kinds of personalisation

A name on the cover, a name through the text and a choice of illustrated character are separate features. Check exactly which your chosen book includes. Goodnight, [Name] keeps its woodland animal illustrations while changing the name and dedication. The Little Bell of Kindness offers an illustrated character choice from a chart. Neither description means a portrait drawn from a photograph. If you are choosing between two stories, make a note of the required name, optional dedication and any character or cover code. Do not copy the instructions from one title into another order: limits and choices vary.

Make a practical shortlist

Compare three things for each candidate: the story, the physical format and the complete cost. Check whether the listing supplies a printed book, how many interior pages it has and whether its photographs show a sample name. Square and A5 editions have different proportions; dimensions help you judge the real size. UK delivery is included in Moonlit Pages book prices, but the final Etsy selection is where you confirm the current total. A more expensive format is a presentation choice, not proof that its story is more suitable. Our format guide explains the choices without assuming that every title has identical options.

A final check before checkout

Ask the family for the confirmed spelling, especially if a name has punctuation or an accent. Read your dedication aloud and remove anything you would not want printed permanently. Then check the selected book, cover, character where offered, size, delivery address and estimated arrival window. Keep the Etsy receipt so any later question can be attached to the actual order. You explore the stories on this website and enter personalisation on Etsy; you do not need to send a child’s name through a separate website form. If a detail remains unclear, use the shop’s Etsy message option before ordering rather than making an assumption about what is included.
